Tribal Leadership

Back in January of this year I read an article online about  the failed Christmas Day attack on a plane headed to Detroit. This was an opinion piece saying that this system wide failure was a reflection of an even bigger problem.  The government was broken because of a lack of leadership and a culture that absolutely loathed working together.  The article, http://bit.ly/bsVA5c was written by Dave Logan.  Dave co-wrote a book, Tribal Leadership, available on Amazon.  I found this book and proceeded to read the hell out of it.  It was a revelation.

The premise of the book is simple.  5 stages of organization, or life as it were, and from those 5 stages, the 4th and 5th stages are where people want to get.  Plenty of examples of successful companies as well as examples of companies and people who are not so successful.  Here are some key points that I have taken from this book:

  • I want to work with my friends but more importantly, I want to work with great people
  • We can be great
  • If there is something noble enough to fight for, people will fight with you
  • Values are key to an amazing workplace
  • If stage 4 can be established and cemented, Life is going to be phenomenal
After I read the book, I went to the website http://www.triballeadership.net/ and signed up for a coaches course that was offered free of charge.  This course has changed my life for the better.  In addition to learning a ton of fascinating things, I have been able to pass this on to other people in my life.  I feel blessed for numerous reasons but here is the main reason:  I am learning something that has allowed me to look deeper into how a productive environment works.  This has an empowering aspect to it in that all projects from this point on are projects that will be shared on all levels by those who are involved. Period.  It is something that I have thought about for years as I bounced around from one type of job to another and now there is a chance to throw this into all aspects of my life.  It has already helped me in my personal life and has opened up doors that I didn't know existed.  There is a tremendous resource that has been created through the Tribal Leadership Coaches Challenge (TLCC) and I am glad that I read that opinion piece back in January.
